Best practices for API testing in microservices architecture

I'm working on a microservices project and wondering what are the best practices for API testing. Should I use contract testing? What tools do you recommend? We currently have about 15 microservices communicating via REST APIs. I've heard about tools like Pact for contract testing but not sure if it's worth the investment. Any advice from those who have implemented comprehensive API testing strategies?
